10月はみんなが大好きな「ハロウィーン」の季節です。
ようやく日本でもいろいろなところでパーティが開催されるようになってきましたね。
今月は「テンズクラブ英会話」のブラッド先生に、子どもの頃のハロウィーンの思い出を聞かせてもらいました。

　 "Tonight's the night"

　 I already knew how I looked in my costume having worn it at home several times prior to this day ensuring that I looked the part and that my mask didn't have the possibility of slowly suffocating me. That was not my only sneak peek of Halloween fun however.At the beginning of each October I would begin combing the house, checking each of my mother's most-used Christmas/birthday gift hiding spots hoping to find bags filled with miniature versions of all my favorite candy bars.Once found, a small hole and carefully disposed candy wrappers would allow to me to start the festivities early while denying decidedly less-deserving children of most of the premium candy bars but leaving the sour little unmarked candies untouched.

　When I returned home, usually at about 10pm I brought with me about two green bags filled with booty.My costume, which was no-doubt missing pieces and parts by this time but would remain on my back while I sorted through my haul.Chocolate bars were eaten first followed by caramel cubes, licorice, teeth-removing toffee blobs, assorted fruit flavored candies and finally those dreadful little sour things.Naturally, all the fruit given to me by people who were probably never children themselves, would naturally be donated to the kitchen fruit bowl.

「今夜がハロウィーンだ」

コスチュームを着ると、どんな風になるのか僕はすでに分かっていた。その日よりも前に何度も着てみて、それらしく見えるか、マスクで首が絞まって苦しくなったりしないかチェックしていた。でも、これだけが僕のハロウィーンのお楽しみではない。10月の初めに、お気に入りのミニ・キャンディバーが詰まっている袋が見つかることを期待しながら、母がよく使うクリスマスプレゼントと誕生日プレゼントの隠し場所をチェックして、家中をくまなく探し始める。袋を見つけると、小さく開けた穴と丁寧に捨てられたキャンディの包み紙が僕をいち早くお祭り気分にさせてくれた。プレミアムキャンディーバーは他の子どもにあげないように自分のものにして、すっぱい小さなキャンディをそのまま袋の中に残した。

ハロウィーンパーティから家に戻るのはいつも夜10時くらいで、緑色をした袋２ついっぱいに戦利品を持ち帰った。家に着く頃までには、コスチュームのパーツがところどころ取れていたけど、コスチュームを着たまま戦利品をチェックした。チョコレートバーをまず食べて、続いてキャラメルキューブ、リコリス（甘草エキスの入った黒いお菓子）、歯がとれそうなタフィー、フルーツ味のキャンディ・アソート、そして最後に恐ろしくすっぱいキャンディを食べた。子どもの気持ちが分かっていない人たちからもらった果物は、当然、台所の果物を入れている器に寄付した。

1週間も経たないうちに、戦利品でいっぱいだった緑の袋はもう空っぽになり、他の子どもたちが校庭で、もらったキャンディにまだ手をつけていないと言っているのを聞くたびにやきもちを焼いた。でもまぁ、クリスマスはもうすぐだよね？
